Powell River is a beautiful town on Sunshine Coast. We often travel there when Paul has work in the area. It becomes sort of a mini getaway that the girls and I look forward to. Powell river began as an industrial center but today is known for its outdoor adventures.
Where to Stay in Powell River
The Beach Garden’s Resort and Marina hotel in Powell River offers 48 deluxe ocean front rooms with private patios. We stayed in a 2 queen bed room and was very comfortable in the room. The room came equipped with a keurig, television and air conditioner. The bath amenities were somewhat lacking as they did not offer any lotion. The resort itself has a restaurant as well as gym and a swimming pool however you had to walk to the lobby to get escorted to the gym and pool. Another note to keep in mind when booking this hotel is that there is no staff on site after 9pm. So be sure to ask for those extra pillows and towels you may want before hand! Other than that we would stay here again because of the amazing view and the quality rooms.
Where to Eat in Powell River
BREAKFAST
One of our favorite things to do when travelling is to try out the locals recommended places to eat! Magpie’s Diner had great reviews so we decided to head over for breakfast and I am glad we did! Open for breakfast and lunch Magpie’s Diner has a unique atmosphere and menu.
Magpie’s Diner offers all of the favorites such as french toast, eggs, bacon etc. But what sets them apart from your regular breakfast chain such as Denny’s or IHOP is their extensive menu with choices such as ‘The Big Ukranian” to “Huevos Rancheros” Magpie’s Diner has something for everyone’s taste buds. What I love personally is Magpie’s eggs Benedict selection! Whether you’re staying true to the classic benny or feeling adventurous and wanting to go spicy with the capicollo benny Magpie’s Diner won’t disappoint.
LUNCH
Who would have thought that Powell River has an amazing fresh and vibrant Mexican Cuisine. Located in the heart of downtown Powell River Costa Del Sol is a must eat at restaurant.
The restaurant is self is rather small in size with limited seating but the staff is very friendly and accommodating. We brought Margaux in her umbrella stroller fast asleep and the staff did everything they could to ensure that we were comfortable with a table that could accommodate Margaux. I would recommend sitting out on the patio. It has a view of the water and is a great way to relax.
Paul and I ordered the Fish and Shrimp Tacos while the girls ordered cheese and chicken quesadillas. The serving sizes were perfect, the food was delicious and filling. The girls loved that Costa del sol offered mexican soda flavors and thoroughly enjoyed their mango sodas.
DINNER
A lot of businesses in Powell River close quite early to what we are used to here in Vancouver. Paul finished work a little later than expected and the one restaurant that was open late enough was Coastal Cookery. I would say that the vibe of this restaurant is similar to a Cactus Club. Lively music, a younger crowd and on a Friday night there were many birthdays being celebrated. The menu at first glance doesn’t seem to kid friendly however they do offer half sizes on the orders which ended up being perfect for the girls! Margaux and Aria shared a half order of the Macaroni and Belle ordered the Poutine. Both entrees had unique take on the traditional dishes and we were very pleased with them!
I ordered the Waffle Chicken sandwich which was huge in serving size and was such a savory dish! I would totally return to this restaurant to get a taste of that sandwich again!
