Hey friends! Today I am going to be giving my 7 top SEO tips to grow your blog like a pro! So what is SEO? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Google uses SEO analysis to provide search users with a list of websites they determine to be most relevant. Ensuring your posts are SEO proofed will help your articles rank higher in search engines which means you’ll be exposed to more readers, which in turn means more subscribers!
1. Use an SEO plugin such as YOAST
What better way to SEO proof your posts than installing a plugin to do it for you! Okay well it doesn’t actually do it for you but its pretty darn close. Once the Yoast SEO plugin is installed it becomes viewable under the editing portion of your posts. It then analyzes the strength of your SEO! It shows you the problems, gives you tips on how to improve it and also shows you the good results. It also analyzes the readability of your posts and again offers the same recommendations there. With Yoast you can also add keywords and edit the snippet that would appear under your post title in google. If you walk away with just one of these top SEO tips let this plugin be it! Yoast is certainly one of the 10 things I wish I knew about before I started blogging!
2. Use keywords or long tail keywords
Keywords help your readers find your posts on Google. It’s important that your keyword has a density of 1-2% in your post so if you have a post that has 300 words you would want to see your keywords about 2-6 times throughout your posts. Its also important to have your keywords in certain spots throughout your posts:
- In your Post URL.
- In the title of your post.
- In the first paragraph of your post.
- In the meta description which is the ‘snippet’ portion.
- In the headings of you post.
When deciding on keywords it’s more beneficial to have a short phrase also known as long tail keywords rather than just one specific word. If you think about it when you search something on google do you ever just put one word in the search box? You probably search a short phrase instead. For example instead of using the keyword “beauty” which would give you a vague range of posts, I would use the long tail keywords “The top 10 best beauty products for Summer 2018” which tells the reader exactly what your post is about.
3. SEO proof your images
Ever come across images on the web or pinterest whose title is “IMG_12345.JPG?” You want to rename those images so that the title is relevant to your post. It’s also important that the description and Alt text of your images are filled with your keywords and long tail keywords.
4. Make sure your posts are a good length
It’s best to make your posts a minimum of 300 words. Again the Yoast plugin is great for this! If you’re using wordpress it also shows the word count at the bottom left of your editing box. You want to give your readers as much relevant information as you can. Of course its always better if your posts are longer in length as well. Having a larger word count actually helps with the search-ability of your post on google.
5. Your posts should include internal and external links
Using links in your post gives your readers a more in-depth experience. When you link out to other websites that build upon the topic you are already speaking of it builds your credibility and also helps with you guessed it your SEO ranking. Including internal links through out your blog post helps keep readers on your site longer which is exactly what we want. Linking some of your relevant previous posts to your new posts also builds your reputation.
6. Get inbound links
Inbound links are basically free advertising. It’s when someone links from their site to your site. This again helps with the credibility and reputation of your blog in the eyes of your readers as well as Google. One of the ways you can do this is by reaching out to fellow bloggers and collaborating with them or doing guest posts.
7. Consistently create new awesome content
What better way to keep driving traffic to your blog than being consistent in your work and posts. Not only do readers enjoy a fresh new take on topics but Google likes to share the newest most relevant content. I suggest posting at least once a week. You can post more than once a week depending on your schedule and how much time you can dedicate to each post. As it’s said, it’s better to have one post a week that is rocking in every way than to have 2 or 3 posts a week that are mediocre.
